Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3900m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)
Today’s trek begins with a climb offering expansive panoramic views as you move into the upland desert zone and traverse lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. We’ll reach the distinctive Lava Tower (4640m), our highest point for the day, where you can enjoy a well-deserved lunch amidst stunning surroundings.
In the afternoon, we’ll descend steeply to Barranco Camp, nestled at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960m). This camp is sheltered by towering cliffs and provides magnificent views of the plains below.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)
Today begins with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine, followed by a challenging ascent up the Great Barranco Wall. This climb, while not technical, is long and demanding as it separates us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo.
We’ll traverse beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers before heading into the Karanga Valley. From here, a steep climb will bring us to Karanga Camp, situated at 3963m. For those with extra energy, we offer a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before returning to camp for the night.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (3963m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
After a good night’s rest and a hearty breakfast, we embark on the trek to Barafu Camp at 4640m. This climb takes us across barren scree slopes with no vegetation, making for a challenging and steep ascent, further intensified by the altitude.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, we will have a meal and spend the afternoon resting to conserve energy. It’s crucial to stay hydrated and warm in preparation for the long and demanding summit climb ahead. We’ll have an early dinner and aim to get some rest before starting our ascent to the summit between 11 pm and midnight.
Distance Covered: 3 km / 1.9 miles
Approximate Time: 3 hours
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4640m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) & Descend to Millennium Camp (3790m)
We begin our ascent around midnight, starting with a steep climb up to the summit glaciers. The trek through scree is challenging, but the rapid altitude gain offers breathtaking views. After 4 to 5 hours of climbing, we will reach the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of dawn illuminate the landscape. Here, we are surrounded by spectacular ice cliffs and have stunning views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak and beyond.
From Stella Point, it’s another hour of climbing to reach Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating our achievement, we descend by retracing our steps to Stella Point and then continuing down the scree slope back to Barafu Camp for breakfast. We conclude our day by heading down further to Millennium Camp (3790m) for a well-deserved and restful night.
